Frequency counter models can be direct or reciprocal counters. Direct counting models count signal cycles for a specified period, called the gate time, and resolution is in Hertz. Reciprocal counters provide faster, higher resolution performance, with resolution listed is in digits/second. When shopping for a counter, remember to review resolution and accuracy as separate specifications. The resolution of a frequency counter is the smallest change it will detect between closely spaced frequencies.

Counter specifications include frequency range, functions, resolution, and speed, as well as specialized features such as integrated data logging. RF signal strength is an additional factor to review with the RF counter.
