The Dynasonics IS-6000 doppler area velocity flow meter is used to measure flow velocity, level, and temperature with a single submerged sensor in partially filled water and wastewater pipes without a primary device. By directly measuring the velocity at different heights below the surface, the IS-6000 flow meter provides a better flow reading for open channels than by measuring level alone.

As a standard, the flow meter consists of a transmitter and an ultrasonic area velocity sensor for combined velocity and water level measurement. Discharge is then calculated by multiplication of the average flow velocity and the wetted cross-sectional area. The transmitter allows the connection of up to 3 ultrasonic area velocity sensors for simultaneous measurement at up to 3 different measurement spots in one cross-section.

Alternatively, additional external water level sensors (for example, a hydrostatic level sensor or an ultrasonic down-looking level sensor) can be connected to the system depending on specific site conditions, providing accurate water level measurement in case of water level fluctuations. For discharge measurement in pressurized and partially filled pipes, insertion sensors are used. Insertion sensors are installed into the existing pipework through ball valves allowing the installation and removal of the entire sensor for repair, replacement, or cleaning without dewatering the pipe.

The IS-6000 Doppler transmitter incorporates all the required algorithms and software for measurement accuracy and repeatability. Parameterization of the measurement site, data logging, visualization, and data transfer is possible by using the browser-based control and management user interface, which can be run in any standard web browser via PC, notebook, tablet, or smartphone, regardless of location, time, and operating system.

OPERATION
Area-velocity flow meters calculate the flow rate by multiplying the cross sectional area and the velocity of the fluid. The cross sectional area is determined by selecting the shape and size of the channel and measuring the height of the water level. The velocity of the water is measured by a submerged Doppler sensor. Set up the IS-6000 meter from a smartphone or laptop and connecting to the WiFi built into the meter. By using a standard web browser, there is no need to install an app or software. If a physical connection is preferred, the IS-6000 meter can be setup through the Ethernet LAN port. Built in security helps protect against unauthorized access for both WiFi and Ethernet LAN.

Area Velocity Sensor
The Area Velocity Sensor consists of two sensors—a pulse Doppler (green beam) and a level sensor (red beam). The low profile sensor transmits ultrasonic pulses into the flow, which are echoed back from particles in the medium. Using pulse coherent Doppler, the velocity is measured at different levels to determine the velocity profile of flow, resulting in a more accurate reading. An additional benefit of pulsed Doppler is that it eliminates the need for on-site calibration and recalibration based on seasonal flows. The combination velocity and level sensor makes installation easier. For pipes or channels with significant sediment buildup, the sensor can be mounted up the pipe or channel wall and a separate level sensor can be used to measure the height of the water level.
