Flow meters measure volume/time. In other words, flow meters measure the amount of water that will pass by a certain point in a given unit of time. Handheld flow meters are designed measure for depth and velocity in open channels. When combined with user-entered area information, the instruments automatically calculate flow. Flow gauges record time intervals per volume tipped and can be used to measure water flow coming out of a pipe or drain when connected to a data logger.
